Hello and a Happy New Year to you. I hope you enjoyed the Christmas festivities and haven’t burdened yourself with any overly ambitious new year’s resolutions.

It was always my intention to return home from this trip in time for Christmas 2025: a goal that was achieved with about two weeks to spare. Since then, I have taken a bit of a break from blog writing and video editing whilst I re-adjust to the traditional stationary way of life – a simple sounding task that has been much more challenging than expected.

However, there remains plenty of this story still to tell, so the blogs will be coming thick and fast over the course of January (well, relatively speaking anyway). One benefit of this time lag is that, in blog world, I am still in the warm climes of Eastern Anatolia in September, so there’ll be no shortage of sunshine on offer to defrost ourselves in the bleak mid winter…a bit like how the BBC always injected a heavy dose of tropical Caribbean escapism into the schedule with Death in Paradise at this time of year.

So although you know I made it home for Christmas, I hope you can still enjoy the story of this journey without the underlying jeopardy of whether I might end up dead in a ditch somewhere. And just because I didn’t end up dead in a ditch, doesn’t mean I didn’t come close…

Thanks for reading,

Martin
